My interview for the European project WE-RISE is out – "The Power of Uncertainty: A Journey Through Quantum Science". Thank you for the invitation!
In the interview I talk about my research in quantum optics and quantum technologies – from point defects in diamond and hexagonal boron nitride to ultracold atomic gases. I also talk about what I am most proud of: our theoretical model that identified the carbon dimer defect as the origin of ultraviolet quantum emission in hexagonal boron nitride, confirmed in 2025 by several international experimental groups, and my YouTube channel of short physics lectures, which is now shown in Lithuanian classrooms.
We also discuss what is genuinely difficult in research, how uncertainty can become a strength, and what would help more women choose science and stay in it: visibility, mentoring and more stable career paths.

What is WE-RISE?
WE-RISE is a European project that aims to increase the market participation of women-led startups, improve their access to funding and investment, ease their integration into the innovation ecosystem, promote inclusion and diversity in the tech sector, and accelerate innovation and sustainable growth.
Through the project, 40 women-led startups (60% of them from so-called widening countries) will receive €1.2 million in support, along with tailored services (training, consulting, networking and more), while raising awareness of women's leadership. WE-RISE invites women-led startups developing technology solutions in green, climate and agricultural technologies to join.
Project partners: G-FORCE (Slovakia), Bpifrance (France), Toro Ventures (Spain) and Sunrise Tech Park (Saulėtekio Tech Parkas, Lithuania).
The WE-RISE project (No. 101193381) runs from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026 and is funded under the Horizon Europe European Innovation Ecosystems "Startup Europe" call.
