Our research results were widely covered in the Lithuanian and Polish media.

In this work we were the first in the world to identify a quantum emitter operating in the ultraviolet spectral range in hBN – the carbon dimer. In 2024, five years after this paper was published, scientists from France, Hungary, Poland, the USA and China identified the source of ultraviolet quantum emission in hBN in an experiment where they varied the carbon isotopes and the polytype. Thanks to this thorough experiment, they showed that it is indeed the carbon dimer. It is a beautiful example of a theoretical model being ahead of its time and confirmed experimentally only five years later. The discovery concerns a specific material, boron nitride, whose quantum emitters (tiny “light bulbs”) can be used to transmit quantum keys.
